Jarmela Speta

Our music director was born and raised in the Chicago area. She graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Music Education, also majoring in piano and voice.

Her first introduction to barbershop harmony came while she was still in high school when she heard the Chordettes. Those ringing barbershop chords had her hooked right away. In college she joined a Sweet Adelines Chapter in Berwin, IL. Under the coaching of Warren “Buzz:” Haeger and Lyle Pilcher, she became an accomplished barbershop musician.

Jarmela has been directing the Sweet Adelines Opus Chorus in Racine, Wisconsin for forty-seven years, winning many regional championships with them and with the former Country Chords in Sweet Adelines Region 3. She has also served the Sweet Adelines as a Certified Sound Judge, Certified Expression Judge, International Music Faculty Specialist and Certified Arranger. She is a voice teacher and coach, doing her teaching in her home in Palatine, Illinois.

But that’s not all! Jarmela has reigned twice as Queen of Harmony in two International Championship quartets: The NOTA-BELLES in 1955 and The RARITIES in 1970. She also directed the Racine Chorus to an International Chorus Championship in 1973.

“Directing Chicago Metro has become a highlight of my weekly activities; the men are not only good singers, but gentlemen in every way. We sing and laugh a lot together and I hope they’re enjoying our journey to building our singing skills and ringing barbershop chords as much as I am.”
